Within Data & Analytics department (D&A) we need a strong center of excellence for data and data analytics, which are the driving force behind a data-driven culture, data governance & quality frameworks, our BI function and the close connection with IT on a future-proof data infrastructure. The Data Factories team, is a team of data engineers within D&A, whose primary purpose is to establish robust data pipelines for retrieving/receiving data from internal and external sources, store the data as a raw archive (replayable) and eventually send it to the Core Data Platform, which is responsible for the storage of the data. 

What will you do as a Lead Data Engineer Data Factories? 

At one of the world's premier airports, as a Lead Data Engineer you will be responsible for leading the Engineering efforts of the team. In this role, you will work alongside our Core Data Platform team to provide the technical necessities for integrating the different data sources into our main Core Data Platform. To this end, you will guide and coach the engineers in the teams, set technical standards and best practices, ensure high performance along with scalability, and create an optimal work climate where everyone can excel.  

• Improve software development lifecycle 
• Collaborate with other Lead Engineers, Data Architects & Enter. Architects for technical solutions 
• Right now the team is growing, we would like you to help us finding the new members
• Contribute improvements to the Data Platform 

About the teams & projects 
As lead engineer you’ll be leading one scrum teams consisted of engineers a product owner. The Data Factories team works closely with different departments within Schiphol, some of them are AI, BI, IoT, Data Governance and some more. In corporation with the mentioned teams, the Data Factories team works on the implementation of data pipelines which ensure continuity, safety and integrity of the delivered data.

Working as an engineer in Schiphol offers a wide variety of challenges. Schiphol is a city of its own and that is reflected in the variety of data sources you’ll work with: ranging from radar data to web visits. Also, it is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can literally look out of the window and see your software have direct impact. 

In terms of tooling we work on Azure. Some examples of components in our stack include:

• Scala/Python
• Airflow
• Kafka
• Kubernetes
• Spark (Databricks)
• All the previous run on Azure 

How does a typical day for a lead engineer look like? 

• Daily stand-up with your team;
• Technical discussions with your team members and other teams (IT architects, other D&A team leads);
• Planning and prioritization of the tasks;
• Hands on software development;
• Code reviews;
• Working closely with solution architects on data platform architecture;
• Meetings with stakeholders to understand their requirements from data platform;
• By weekly reporting the progress to your manager.

• You have a Bachelors and/or a Masters degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics etc.) 
• You are a proficient data engineer yourself and have a vision on data engineering 
• You have at least 4 years of experience running data driven solutions, including deployment and management of data-pipelines in production. 
• Strong Java/Scala experience, we would prefer someone with more than 4+ years hands-on experience with at least, one of this two.
• Several years of professional experience as data engineer and/or software developer.
• Experience with data-streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis, etc).
• Experience with Apache Spark or Apache Flink.
• Experience with Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience with at least one of the big data technologies (hadoop, cassandra, emr, databricks, avro, hive).
