Department
At the Royal Schiphol Group, we have established a Data, AI & Analytics department (DnA), tasked with accelerating our group-wide transition to a truly data-driven organization. This team also oversee the strategic use of AI, data and applied data science across the Royal Schiphol Group to identify growth opportunities and areas for innovation with new data products and services. The team is also responsible for data governance & quality frameworks, our BI function and the close connection with IT on a future-proof data infrastructure.

What will you be doing as a Data Scientist?
As a senior data scientist at one of the world’s premier airports, you'll be responsible for extracting more value from our rich data sources, by applying machine learning and by integrating your models into data products and services. You will work on a great diversity of datasets and data science problems especially in the passenger domain. To give you an idea, some things that we are currently developing or running in production:

• A system that predicts passenger flows through the terminal for the coming hours using a network of sensors measuring the current flow and flight events.
• A reinforcement learning algorithm to optimize the planning of security lanes and check-in desks.
• Predictions where high density crows will appear by using WiFi tracking data to allow passengers to see where they can easily maintain social distancing for Covid-19.
• Many of the use-cases you’ll work on have a direct effect on the Airport and its passengers and when you walk across the airport you’ll see your models in action.
• As a senior data scientist, you will work closely with business stakeholders and the team of data scientists and data engineers to:
  • Together with our product manager and the business identify new opportunities and translate those into data science projects.
  • Work with a variety of complex data sources ranging from radar data to IoT sensors in the terminal.
  • Implement algorithms on these dataset and run these in production.
  • Mentor and coach more junior team members during your work.
  • Work on taking a project from ideation from POC to production.

Competencies and skills:

• MSc or PhD in a relevant field, like mathematics, physics, computer science etc.
• Analytical and content strength (in DS/DE work field): sees which DS techniques apply to the business problem at hand and be able to structure the approach.
• A curious mindset and an appetite for learning new things every day.
• Team player: strikes effective balance between independence and acting in the interest of the team. We’ll be looking for a real ‘click’.
• Perseverance and a hacker mind-set.
• Communicative skills: fluent in English is a must. Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus.
• Entrepreneurial, responsible and with a contagious level of enthusiasm.

You are knowledgeable and have experience with:

• Machine Learning algorithms and how to implement these on complex data sets. You have a good understanding of basic ML-algorithms like Random Forests, Logistic Regression, (linear) dimensionality reduction techniques, clustering techniques etc.
• Experience applying techniques outside of these basic methods, for example working with Bayesian methods, experience with time series, experience in geospatial statistics etc.
• Experience in simulation, control and reinforcement learning is seen as a big plus.
• Languages: Python
• Libraries & Tooling:
  • The SciPy stack (Pandas/Numpy etc.)
  • Jupyter
  • Git & CI/CD setup
  • Linux and Bash
• Exposure to engineering tooling like Docker, Kubernetes etc. is a plus
• Leading and supervising projects with several other data scientists and collaborating with engineers.
• Taking and running models in Production
• 4+ years of experience as a data scientist required
