Job Description

As a chapter lead of Machine Learning Engineering, you will be joining ING’s Advanced Analytics global organization. You will create opportunities for your chapter employees to reach their full potential and encourages team development. You create a culture in which employees take responsibility, help each other to be successful and remain a step ahead. You manage the performance review process for your chapter colleagues.

You work part-time as a Machine Learning Engineer: Be a regular squad member and continue to apply your Machine Learning and Software Engineering expertise to your squad’s backlog and positively contribute to putting research into production, the vision in your area, introduce and nurture innovation within it.

You discuss the chapter's resource planning and development needs with the global head of analytics product engineering. Encourage knowledge sharing and apply machine learning engineering best practices to analytics applications.

Your responsibilities:

  • You work with your peers to overcome challenges and, collectively, do a better job. You cocreate the analytics product engineering area vision and effectively resource the squads.
  • You are a regular squad member and continue to apply your Machine Learning engineering expertise to your squad’s backlog.
  • You are the hierarchical lead of your chapter, and you support and develop your colleagues through effective knowledge sharing.
  • Together with ING-DTT Analytics Product Owners and Chapter Leads, you help others to be more successful by focusing on craftsmanship, improving and sharing the Way of Working, and creating a high performing team.
  • You are the lead for performance management, training plans, and daily people management for your chapter.
  • You lead the chapter meet-up and ensure way of work-related information is shared and craftsmanship improved.
  • Analytics software development and deployment
  • You work closely with data scientists and backend engineers to take PoCs being developed by data scientists and create a compliant product ready to be deployed into a production environment.
  • Follow coding and security standards to build appropriate deployment scripts.
  • Stay on top of new trends in machine learning engineering technologies.
  • Set the long term technical roadmap for generic real-time cloud native machine learning model inference platform incorporating inner and open source technology

What department?

ING Analytics is an organisation responsible for realizing this vision for ING, differentiating ING as a leader in data-driven organizations within the banking sector and beyond. The organisation consists of a several Global Analytics Centres of Excellence around the bank’s key capabilities (such as Pricing, Risk Management, Financial Crime & RegTech, Customer Intelligence, etc.) as well as strong coordination areas around people capabilities, technology, data, tooling, and external partnerships.

The Data, Tools & Technology team is one of the five core teams within ING Analytics Unit. It is responsible for driving overall strategy and roadmap for analytics platforms, technology and tooling, productionization of analytics models and data roadmap for all the workstreams, change management activities and their interdependencies.

Do you recognize yourself in this profile?


  • Master Degree in AI / Machine Learning / Software Engineering / Computer Science or related field
  • A minimum of 8 years' experience in building 0-downtime distributed software systems
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in tackling the complexity of productionizing ML models and model life cycle
  • Experience with building or maintaining a ML model (serving) platform
  • Experience with systems engineering in an enterprise environment
  • Experience securely building container images(e.g. Docker), running container workloads in production(e.g. Kubernetes), and other cloud native technologies
  • Strong skills in Functional Programming, preferably Scala. Experience with Java and Python
  • Experience with leading a small platform squad (as a Tech Lead)
  • Experience in building an “end-to-end software product” which has an ML component
  • Strong people management skills
  • Experience in agile way of working.
  • Excellent communication skills in English both written and verbal.
  • Experience with source code management (e.g. Git)
  • Experience with building CI/CD pipelines for Machine Learning(CD4ML).

Nice to have:

  • Being an Open Source contributor is a strong plus
  • Good understanding of streaming technologies Kafka or Flink
  • Good understanding of databases; both RDBMS and non-SQL(preferably Cassandra)
  • Experience with tools in the MLOps domain
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and/or GCP/GKE
  • Experience in a highly regulated enterprise environment
  • Experience with configuration management technology(e.g. Ansible)
