Ops Engineer Distributed Data (Cassandra)

Job description:

Do you want to become one of the experts when it comes to all things Cassandra within ING? Helping DevOps teams onboard onto the Cassandra platform and being in control of how Cassandra performs.

The Minions squad provides Cassandra Keyspace as a Service (KaaS) on our multitenant and dedicated Cassandra clusters. KaaS is provided as a complete journey, our center of expertise provides continued support and advice to teams using Cassandra.

The Minions squad strives to be ahead of the game by keeping a close eye on all the metrics and logs to detect possible interruptions before they happen. Tools like Grafana, Kibana, Prometheus are essential in our strive to provide a performant and resilient platform.

We are looking for an enthusiastic data driven engineer who loves metrics and has a natural tendency to help and support other engineering teams. A large part of this function will be customer support and owning the platform, knowing what is happening and communicating that with the clients.

The squads main duties include:

  • Take ownership of Cassandra Keyspace as a Service that the squad provides to tenants.
  • Understanding the detailed technical behavior of your system under normal and peak loads.
  • Life cycle maintenance of the Cassandra and Linux stack.
  • Automating the onboarding process for new Cassandra users.
  • Continuously monitor and improve efficiency, quality and time-to-market through in-depth automation of building, testing and deployment.
  • Deliver high quality support and training for data-modeling and application design to keyspace users.

Desired skills and expertise:

  • Customer focused
  • Proactive customer support
  • Professional and technical ability at bachelor level.
  • 3-5 years of experience in operational environment.
  • Platform engineering and full stack experience is hugely beneficial.
  • Solid understanding of operating, maintaining and developing against NoSQL/Low Latency Data Store (LLDS) Solutions e.g. Cassandra.
  • Ability to use tools like Python, Bash and other scripting languages to automate daily tasks.
  • Good understanding of the Linux operating system (Rhel and Debian).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools from Azure and configuration management tools like Ansible.
  • Knowledge of Java is strongly preferred.
  • Focused on delivering quality above quantity.
  • Knowledge of other databases is preferred.
  • Strong conceptual understanding of the big picture is preferred.
  • Passion for backend technology.
  • Attention to detail.
