Site Reliability Engineer Big Data in Utrecht

Big-data is an important part of bol.com. Analysing our the way our customer buy their product; what do they buy, when do they buy, what might be interesting for them to buy as well? These are the kind of questions our data analysts try to answer. Providing them with the right tools is done by our big-data development teams. But they are missing an essential person in their team. A Site Reliability Engineer.

As Site Reliability Engineer Big Data you are responsible for the automation and availability our big data applications. You’ll build tooling and select and implement innovative solutions so the development teams get more and more autonomous. You will continuously address the challenge of managing and scaling our platform and its ever increasing complexity.

You work in an independent team that represent both development and operations. The projects you work on focus on big data tooling. As a Big Data appliance running on Hadoop we now use Platfora and are looking for a new solution. You guard and optimize the performance, security and scalability of our environment. And you have space to implement your own ideas and initiatives.

Your role

• Work together with the development team to support the big data solutions within bol.com
• Help scrum teams to think about how changes effect the availability of our Hadoop cluster
• Build tooling to administer and scale the environment
• Initiate and effect improvements

Who you are

As Engineer, you embrace configuration management, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring as the foundation of administering your scalable production environment. You stay on top of developments in your field and apply them to lift yourself and bol.com to the next level. Being on standby is not a problem. But you also appreciate a good night’s sleep and false positives are not conductive.

Must haves

• Knowledge of Hadoop is a must, preferably you have knowledge of map reduce, hive, hbase and spark.
• Experience with a big data platform (we work with platfora)
• Fluent in Linux (we work with RHEL)
• Constantly trying to automate yourself out of work with your coding skills. We mainly use Python, Puppet, Ruby and shell;
• You don’t just talk about the best solutions, you build and administer them
