Java Engineer in Utrecht

Beschrijving

Great! Because truth be told, there’s plenty to do. We serve over 8 million customers. Who get to pick from a catalogue of roughly 15 million products. And we manage an inventory of 350.000 items and counting.

We want to ensure that stock levels meet our evolving customer demands. Collaborative inventory management is key. Collaborative? Yep, bol.com is not just a shop, it’s a reseller platform. To keep prices low and availability high, we work closely with suppliers & partners to minimize process bottlenecks and optimize warehouse utilization.

And ‘we’ are?

We’re scrum team 15B. Or rather, we’re engineers Bart, Paul, Michael, Jon, Niels and product owner Joel. Joel gets mentioned last, but he’s least by far; he’s closely involved in everything we do, has an IT mindset, and is even picking up some coding these days. We also work closely together with several business analysts and stakeholders, and other scrum teams. But that’s just who we are now. We aspire to be You, Bart, Paul, Michael, Jon, Niels and Joel. Where you are an experienced backend Java – and Kotlin – engineer with a test-mindset.

What do we do, exactly?
That’s tricky to explain, but in a nutshell, we deal with stock. As in: stock quantity and location, stock changes and stock valuation. Our systems consist of multiple services made in Java, and since a few weeks Kotlin too. We also have a GUI web application built in Angular that communicates with the backend via REST.
So, if the following list makes sense to you, chances are you’d fit right in:

  • Kotlin and Java
  • Spring Boot
  • Knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with Angular will go a long way
  • As will experience with API design and designing tests
  • Understanding of agile/scrum
  • Fluent would be great: Git, Maven, IntelliJ IDEA
  • Familiarity is a plus: Jenkins, Docker, Cloud experience, Jira, Confluence

How we do what we do?

As a team! Continuous integration and delivery are part of the workflow, so we autonomously deploy our code to production. We are advocates of the DevOps school and like to run our own systems. Build it, run it, love it. That’s our first mantra. Building the right things right is the second, because we believe high quality software best serves our business.

Team convictions

  • Untested code is broken code
  • A story isn’t done until it’s live on production
  • We keep our dependencies up to date
  • We do extensive code reviews to deliver the best code possible
  • We focus on removing technical debt while doing innovations
  • Code style is personal but we have defined our own
  • We only use technology we want to teach a junior

In short: We believe in the power of fun.
