Your work environment and role
The ambition of ING is to deliver one combined value proposition to the customers, by operating one organisation, one set of systems and one Agile Way of Working. A shared ownership for the IT platform and one integrated IT backlog have been identified as key enablers for this ambitious target. The IT Area Lead has a key role in making this happen and in designing and executing a successful IT strategy.
We have 3 IT Area Lead vacancies in the ‘Client Servicing, Data Management, Cross-Product Tooling & Know Your Customer’ organisation (NL positions):
Cross-border positions will require to divide working time between Amsterdam and Romania or India, working abroad for a part of the working week.
Your role:
- IT Custodianship of our (strategic) WB applications with a view to keeping IT Risk down
- Predictable delivery of our software by Squads in your area where we live up to our promises with respect to quality, timelines and features
- Reliable operation of IT assets where KPIs for Incidents are met and SLAs are lived up to
- Stakeholder management and contributing to QBRs of your area
- Providing technical leadership, and growing craftsmanship on the part of IT Chapters in your area with an emphasis on
- Agile customer-centric software development
- Analytics and metrics of customer behavior
- People-oriented management and growth of Chapter leads and technical people
- High quality recruitment process
- Reduction of Infra costs through the move to IPC
- Proper budget control
- Automated testing and continuous delivery
- Close integration of our efforts with TPA with respect to both contributing to it as well as consumption
- Optimizing the setup of what we build off-shore to ensure we are able to iterate faster. Primary locations are ING Tech Romania and SSI-partners in India
As the IT area lead
You will work in the dynamic and challenging environment of the IT organisation of WB Tech. ‘Client Servicing, Data Management, Cross-Product Tooling & Know Your Customer’ supplies products and services that are in principle cross-Tribe and are used by large parts of Wholesale Banking and sometimes the entire bank.
There are three parts identified:
- Bank Wide Operations (BWO) and Chief Data Management Office (CDMO)
- Cross-Product Tooling, with the IT areas Integration and Vantage/GRID
- Wholesale Data Management, with the IT areas Data Integration Layer (DIL) and Management Information and Business Intelligence (MIBI)

Your key responsibilities
1. Creating and ensuring the 'new' culture and one Agile Way of Working
Responsible for effective collaboration and for one Agile Way of Working in cross-border areas and as part of the tribes:
- Ensures proper implementation of One Agile Way of Working across the IT Area
- Acts as an ambassador for culture change and serves as a role model in terms of the new way of working: from 'an organisation talking' to 'an organisation doing'
- Stimulates cross-border interaction between and alignment across people, tribes, squads, areas and chapters
- Drives cross-cultural collaboration by creating awareness and understanding, leveraging diversity
- Creates an atmosphere in which everyone feels appreciated and heard
2. Developing craftsmanship of everyone working in the IT domain cross-border
Management responsibility for several Chapter Leads. Also responsible for ensuring overall IT maturity and for developing craftsmanship of the employees working in the IT Area:
- Encourages Chapter Leads to continuously develop their capabilities and competencies to remain up-to-market in their field at all times
- Oversees overall IT maturity in chapters and drives continuous craftsmanship development in the IT Area across countries
3. Designing and executing the IT strategy
Responsible for:
- Defining and implementing the IT strategy with proper IT Landscape for the IT Area in line with INGs IT strategy in order to realize the purposes of the Tribes
- Identifying and adopting applicable changes in the market with regards to innovation, time to market, etc. for the IT Area
- Ensuring a safe and compliant bank from an IT perspective (IT custodianship)
- Delivery responsibility and responsibility for IT-related decisions within the IT Area
- Defining and implementing vendor and sourcing strategy

Proven track record and technical skills
- Master of Science in Computer Science or an equivalent field
- You are genuinely interested in and understand business and how our customers use our products. You stay up-to-day on how the business is changing and are able to think together with our business colleagues about how best to evolve our proposition
- While not mandatory knowledge of our business areas is a big nice-to-have
- You are passionate about growing and developing technical people
- You possess excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- You love technology and naturally stay up-to-date on relevant new developments
- Existing experience in line management of teams responsible for high criticality applications
- Proven track record of past Engineering experience, preferably in creating high scalability mission-critical applications
- You value a multi-cultured environment where English is the working language and you easily get on with people from different cultural backgrounds
